Silk is a fiber of animal origins, rich in protein, from which you can create fine fabrics.
It is obtained from silkworms which generally belong to a species called Dark Bombyx. It is said that silkworm rearing comes to us thanks to the Chinese emperor Xi Ling Shi, while the process of creation of silk was already spread during the 3000 B.C.
From the XII century, Italy was the biggest producer of silk: Palermo, Messina and Catanzaro were the most important cities, and contributed towards Italian primacy in the silk production.
Taffetà, Georgette, Chiffon, Organza, Raso, Lampasso, Broccatello, Velluto, Damasco, Broccato, Crepe de Chine e Shantung. All these fabrics are created from silk.
