Brocade is an ‘operated fabric’, with colored complex patterns, which are obtained with

discontinuous weaves. These weaves don’t cover the whole fabric, they are created on frames which is specifically predisposed.

Starting from XIX, brocade was created with a Jacquard frame which improved the production time and reduced costs. (Before that it was used a telaio a tiro)

the term brocade is also used in industrial weaving to create a fabric operated with warp elements. Hence, it necessitates several warps: one for the base and others for the work on it.

Brocade fabrics have very ancient origins and they can be found in every historical and cultural contest. They are precious fabrics, because of the material used -silk- as well as for the complexity of the work on it (which was reserved only to royalty, clergy and noblesse)

Venice, Florence, Milan and Genoa have been important centers for the production of this noble fabric.
